{"id":45,"date":"2016-11-16T01:16:10","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T01:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sigai.acm.org\/aimatters\/blog\/?p=45"},"modified":"2016-11-16T01:18:06","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T01:18:06","slug":"policy-matters-posting-for-november-15-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigai.acm.org\/aimatters\/blog\/2016\/11\/16\/policy-matters-posting-for-november-15-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Policy Matters Posting for November 15, 2016: AAAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AAAS Policy Issues and Events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our survey of organizations related to AI &amp; policy, this post reminds us of the potential opportunities to partner with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, particularly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/program\/center-science-policy-and-society-programs\">Center of Science, Policy, and Society<\/a>. While AAAS policy issues are usually not directly about AI, a regular look at their Policy Alert notifications is useful for larger policy issues\u00a0and opportunities for SIGAI to be involved.<\/p>\n<p>A recent event directly related to AI policy was the 41st Annual AAAS <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/page\/forum-science-technology-policy\">Forum on Science &amp; Technology Policy<\/a>. At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/news\/artificial-intelligence-requires-thoughtful-policymaking-experts-say\">panel<\/a> \u201cBest Friend or Worst Nightmare? Autonomy and AI in the Lab and in Society,\u201d AI professionals discussed the role of policy in integrating new technologies into people\u2019s lives, particularly for autonomous systems.<\/p>\n<p>Also keep in mind the AAAS Science &amp; Technology Policy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/stpf\">Fellowships<\/a> and encourage applications by AI professionals in the spectrum of career stages, from recent PhD graduates to faculty on sabbatical to retired scientists and engineers.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/event\/2016-leadership-seminar-science-technology-policy\">Leadership Seminar<\/a> is a Science &amp; Technology Policy \u201ccrash course\u201d being held this week.
