{"id":603,"date":"2021-01-16T17:55:35","date_gmt":"2021-01-16T17:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sigai.acm.org\/aimatters\/blog\/?p=603"},"modified":"2021-01-16T17:56:17","modified_gmt":"2021-01-16T17:56:17","slug":"ostp-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigai.acm.org\/aimatters\/blog\/2021\/01\/16\/ostp-news\/","title":{"rendered":"OSTP News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>OSTP Launches\nNational AI Initiative Office<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy announced the establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/white-house-launches-national-artificial-intelligence-initiative-office\/\">National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office<\/a>.\u00a0 As outlined in legislation, this Office will serve as the point of contact on Federal AI activities across the interagency, as well as with private sector, academia, and other stakeholders. The Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence will oversee the National AI Initiative Office, and Dr. Lynne E. Parker, Deputy United States Chief Technology Officer, will serve as the Founding Director. As explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidetechmedia.com\/2021\/01\/11\/ai-update-provisions-in-the-national-defense-authorization-act-signal-the-importance-of-ai-to-american-competitiveness\/#more-7887\">Inside Tech Media<\/a>, the newly enacted National Defense Authorization Act contains important provisions regarding the development and deployment of AI technologies, many of which build upon previous legislation introduced in the 116th Congress, including the establishment of the National AI Initiative Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>White House Science\nTeam<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 15, key members of President-Elect Biden\u2019s were <a href=\"https:\/\/buildbackbetter.gov\/press-releases\/president-elect-biden-announces-key-members-of-his-white-house-science-team\/\">announced<\/a>. The press release says \u201cThese diverse, deeply experienced scientists and experts will play a key role in shaping America\u2019s future \u2014 and will prepare us to lead the world in the 21st century and beyond.\u201d President-elect Joe Biden said,\u00a0\u201cScience will always be at the forefront of my administration \u2014 and these world-renowned scientists will ensure everything we do is grounded in science, facts, and the truth. Their trusted guidance will be essential as we come together to end this pandemic, bring our economy back, and pursue new breakthroughs to improve the quality of life of all Americans.\u201d <br>He will nominate Dr. Eric Lander (<a href=\"https:\/\/buildbackbetter.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lander.jpeg\">photo<\/a>) as Director of the OSTP and to serve as the Presidential Science Advisor. \u201cThe president-elect is elevating the role of science within the White House, including by designating the Presidential Science Advisor as a member of the Cabinet for the first time in history.\u201d<br>Other key members are<br><strong>Alondra Nelson, Ph.D., OSTP Deputy Director for Science and Society<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/buildbackbetter.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Alondra.jpg\">(photo<\/a>)<br><strong>Frances H.
